Brindlee Mountain’s volleyball team won the critical opener in Tuesday’s Class 3A, Area 13 Tournament and thus advanced to the sub-regional round of the state playoffs.

Playing at regular-season area champ Susan Moore, the Lady Lions started fast, then stalled, then finally prevailed in a marathon match against Holly Pond. Brindlee Mountain jumped out to a 2-0 lead (25-23, 25-18) before watching the Lady Broncos roar back and take the next two sets, 25-20, 25-19.

Coach Elizabeth Martin’s Lady Broncos then won the fifth and deciding set, 15-10, to secure a spot in the sub-regional. Chasity Walker was determined to be the Lady Lions’ most valuable player in the match.

Brindlee Mountain lost to the host team in three sets (10-25, 11-25, 14-25) to advance as the Area 13 runner-up. Susan Moore had advanced by defeating J.B. Pennington in the other semifinal, 25-11, 25-17, 25-10.

Brindlee Mountain plays at Pleasant Valley at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Pleasant Valley is located at 4141 Pleasant Valley Rd., Jacksonville.

Pleasant Valley won the Area 11 Tournament on Tuesday by defeating Weaver 25-15, 25-11, 25-12 and Piedmont 25-18, 25-12, 25-19.

Making the All-Area Tournament team for Brindlee Mountain were Walker, Chantzley Kirkland and Kelsie Tyler.

The Lady Lions secured the No. 3 seed in the tournament by beating Holly Pond at home last Thursday, 25-8, 25-18, 19-25, 19-25, 15-11. That made Brindlee Mountain 2-4 in area matches. After the area tournament, the Lady Lions are 14-18.

That record includes two matches played Monday at Westminster Christian. The Lady Lions lost to Westminster 18-25, 14-25 but defeated Oakwood, 25-15, 25-16.
