Twelve members of the Arab High School swim team competed in the Class 1A-5A division of the AHSAA North Alabama Sectional Swim and Dive meet on Nov. 22-23 in Huntsville. All swimmers were trying to qualify for the AHSAA State Championship set for Dec. 6-7 at Auburn.

The Lady Knights team placed fourth with 169 points and the boys team placed fourth with 111 points.

In Friday’s preliminary team events, both girls and boys 200-yard freestyle and 400 free relay teams advanced to Saturday’s finals, and all four relays solidified qualification for state.

Boys relay members who advanced to state include: Landon Stone, Aaron Aldaz, Blake Griffin, and Heath Isom.

The girls relay team members who advanced to state include: Sarah Beth Sularin, Kayleigh King, Hannah McMahan and Julia Scott.

The girls 200 medley relay including Kate Collins, Maria Johanson, Anna Gracie Mallard and Elizabeth Skidmore performed well at finals, placing seventh, but did not advance to state.

In Friday’s preliminary individual events for the girls team, King and Scott placed fifth and sixth, respectively, for the 200 freestyle. In addition, King placed seventh in the 100 backstroke and Scott placed 11th in the 100 freestyle.

The Lady Knights who competed and placed in the 50 freestyle were McMahan (third), Sularin (fifth) and Collins (18th). McMahan and Sulari also placed sixth and eighth, respectively, for the 100 freestyle.

In Friday’s preliminary individual events for the boys team, Isom and Stone placed second and 10th, respectively, in the 50 freestyle. Two others that competed in the 50 free were Griffin (16th) and Aldaz (17th).

For the 100 freestyle, Isom placed first and Stone placed eighth, both securing their spots for the finals competition. Also, Aldaz placed 13th in the 100 freestyle and Griffin placed ninth in the 100 backstroke.

In Saturday’s finals, girls team captain King placed third in the 200 freestyle and will represent Arab for this event at state. Isom, the boys team captain, earned the highest number of points for the Knights team when he placed first in the 100 freestyle and second in the 50 freestyle.

Isom was the 1A-5A sectional champion for the 100 free.

Other Knights who scored points for the team were:

• King, 100 backstroke, seventh place

• McMahan, 100 free, seventh place 

• Sott, 200 free, sixth place

• Stone, 100 free, seventh place

• Sularin, 100 free, fifth place
