Riptide defeats Fort Payne, Jacksonville

The Arab Riptide completed the regular season in remarkable fashion Tuesday with “landslide” wins over Fort Payne and Jacksonville, as head coach Richard Moser called them, and enter the postseason today on a tidal wave of momentum.

Arab took 70 swimmers on the long trip to Fort Payne, and they produced 604 team points, far greater than Fort Payne (162) and Jacksonville (118). That gives the Riptide a 7-3 record for the regular season.

The team is competing today in the Marshall County meet in Boaz with only Albertville seemingly out of reach for this surging squad.

“We went 2-5 last year so that’s a big turnaround,” said Moser. “We’ve broken multiple pool records this year and look to carry that momentum into the postseason.

“We start our run (today) at county in Boaz and then take on all the northern alabama teams at district in Cullman (July 12-13).

As has happened frequently this season, another Riptide record went down at Fort Payne. The 8-and-under boys freestyle relay team of Bentley Bowling, Colt Yates, Braylen Wilson and Owen Lambert broke a record set in 2011 by the team of James Ed Johnson, John Wesson Johnson, Collin Stewart and Tristin Vanstone.

The old record was 1:16.75. The new record is 1:16.08.

“We had several swimmers have personal best swims and I am super proud of the them.” Moser said.
