It’s no secret anymore if you’ve heard the Arab marching band practicing.
Arab’s new fight song sounds like Troy University’s fight song, “Trojans, One and All.”
However, band director Ty Parker penned some words for Arab’s version. I have not read them yet, but here’s the words to Troy’s version of the song:
Here’s to the school we love,
We are Trojans, one and all.
We will always cheer for victory,
and you’ll never let us fall.
Go! Go! Go!
Cheers to T-R-O-Y,
We are with you all the way.
So get out there team and
Fight! Fight! Fight!
And win today!
I’ve listened to the Troy band’s version online. I thought it sounded pretty spirited.
For some people, it’ll never replace “Dixie,” and truthfully, as a song, this is not as good as “Dixie,” but it’s not bad, either.
And from what I hear, the AHS band’s halftime show is looking and sounding pretty special.
I’m looking forward to opening night on Aug. 23.
And let’s give this song and these kids performing it all the support we can.
• The Alabama Sports Writers Association preseason high school football rankings are out, and they reveal some interesting factors impacting local teams.
For starters, Arab and Brewer are not ranked in Class 5A (no surprise there), and Brindlee Mountain isn’t either (certainly no surprise there).
Arab and Brewer face one ranked team each in Region 8 favorite Madison Academy (fourth). They also face a pair of region teams who collected votes in East Limestone (15th) and Scottsboro (16th).
Arab also plays at North Jackson in its season finale. North Jackson collected votes in Class 4A and essentially would be ranked No. 11.
Brindlee Mountain doesn’t face a ranked team but Region 7 foe Pisgah got enough votes to be considered No. 14 in Class 3A.
Here are the No. 1 teams in each class: Class 7A, Central-Phenix City; Class 6A, Pinson Valley; Class 5A, Briarwood; Class 4A, UMS-Wright; Class 3A, Flomaton; Class 2A, Fyffe; Class 1A, Mars Hill Bible; AISA, Autauga Aca.
We’ll have the complete preseason poll in Saturday’s paper, space permitting.
• Arab wrestling coach Michael Pruitt has released the tentative schedule for his varsity, junior varsity and junior high teams. He added he expects to add another match or two.
