Brindlee Mountain cross country coach Evan Lemons put his runners’ performances in the season-opening Pisgah Invitational last season in perspective.
“It was the first meet of the year, it was a very challenging course on a hot day,” he said. “I did not care about our times because of the heat and terrain.
“It was just a glorified practice for us and allowed our ‘newbies’ to get their feet wet.”
David Costley was the standout performer for the Lions with a seventh place overall finish and a second-place finish in the small schools division.
Savanna Avelar led the Lady Lions with a third-place small schools finish. Jasmine Avelar finished eighth and Abbey Mooneyham 10th to earn T-shirts. Carrie Cooper finished 15th and Chantzley Kirkland finished 21st.
The Lady Lions finished third as a team.
In the JV races, first-year runner Adriana Hernandez finished third in small schools and Alyssa Grider finished 10th.
On the boys side, Joey Goosetree finished 8th and John Paul Taymon 9th.
No other Brindlee Mountain teams scored as a team except the varsity girls team.
