A Brindlee Mountain assistant football coach has been fired by Marshall County Schools after an incident involving a player on his own team during the Lions’ game at Sumiton Christian on Sept. 24.

Lions head coach Keith Garner confirmed that Donny Stevens was dismissed by county school board officials on Monday, Sept. 27, after they watched video of the incident.

According to multiple witnesses, a player from Sumiton Christian and a player from Brindlee Mountain were involved in a fight on the field after play had ended. Stevens pulled the Brindlee Mountain player off the field and moments later, the two got into a verbal argument on the Brindlee Mountain sidelines.

Video of that argument led to Stevens’ dismissal.

Stevens, also the school’s head soccer coach, obviously was upset about the incident but did not want to comment.

“I will let Coach Garner answer that,” Stevens told the Tribune. “I don’t even care to discuss it.”

Stevens coached the offensive and defensive lines at Brindlee Mountain and served as the team’s defensive coordinator. He was one of only three paid assistants on Garner’s staff.

Stevens continues as a teacher at Brindlee Mountain. The player remains on the team.
