Brindlee Mountain’s softball team played 3A, Area 13 rival J.B. Pennington three times this past week, losing two times.

Fortunately for the Lady Lions, they one game they won actually counted in the area standings. That was Monday at Pennington, when the Lady Lions won 18-3 to improve to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in area play.

Kaylie Mashburn had a huge day, going 5-for-5 with a double and a homer, her third of the season. Kylie Westbrook earned the win and also went 2-for-4 with two homers, her first two of the season. She also drew a walk.

Kailyn Childress had two hits and a walk.

Brindlee Mountain also played Pennington twice over the weekend in a tournament at Oneonta. The Lady Lions defeated Jacksonville 4-3 on Friday before falling to Pennington 10-1.

On Saturday, the Lady Lions fell to Oneonta 6-0 before losing to Pennington again, 8-3.

For the tournament, Adri Knepper went 4-for-9, Mashburn went 2-for-5 before getting injured and Kylie Westbrook went 2-for-9 with two walks. She also got the win in the Jacksonville game. Layla Bruno had two hits, and Autumn Abernathy and Kaylie Westbook each had a hit and a walk.

Chantzley Kirkland had one hit, one walk and was hit by a pitch.

On Monday, the JV Lady Lions lost to Pennington 9-8 when the Lady Tigers pushed across a run in the final inning. Karli Staton had two hits, including a double, Maci Tedder went 2-for-2 and Brooke West went 2-for-3.

Chloe Westbrook got a hit, Erin Chester had a hit and a walk and Devon Murray had a hit.

Today (Thursday), the Lady Lions are scheduled to play at home against Douglas before competing in a tournament this weekend at Boaz.

Area play heats up next week when Brindlee Mountain plays at Susan Moore on Tuesday and at home against Holly Pond on Thursday.


Coach Allan Slusher’s team won twice this past week, beating Shoals Christian 12-2 on Monday after blanking Columbia 10-0 last Thursday.

Will Compton struck out 10 and had two hits and an RBI against Shoals Christian. Bryson Wilbanks had three hits, including two triples, and four RBIs.

Also Monday, the Lions lost to Sheffield, 13-5. Compton had two hits.

Against Columbia, Westbrook and Ian Garner combined for the win. Westbrook struck out eight and gave up no hits in 3.1 innings. Garner struck out four and gave up one hit in relief.

Westbrook had two hits and two RBIs; Compton had two hits and an RBI; and Jacob Shaver had two hits and three RBIs.
