The Brindlee Mountain boys got a rude awakening to start the new year.

Playing at Sand Rock on Monday, the varsity team lost 80-53 after the JV boys fell 48-28.

In the JV game, John Paul Taymon scored eight points and Colton Hall had seven. The Lions made three 3-pointers compared to the Wildcats hitting eight.

In the varsity game, Caleb Scott scored 19 and Andrew Byars had 12. Will Compton had seven rebounds and three assists.

The Lions trailed 25-8 after one quarter as Scott scored all eight of the points. The Wildcats hit four 3’s in the game but none in their red-hot first quarter.

The Lady Lions didn’t play. All three teams play today and Friday at home. On Thursday, the varsity teams will play Area 13 rival J.B. Pennington. On Friday, the opponent is Marshall County rival DAR.

• Last week, both varsity teams played in holiday tournaments. The boys played Monday through Wednesday at Supreme Courts. The girls played Tuesday through Thursday at John Paul II Catholic.

On Monday (Dec. 27), the boys lost to Mortimer Jordan 72-41. Scott led the way with 13 points.

On Tuesday, the Lions fell to Ider 52-46. Byars led the way with 11 points, followed by Scott with 10 points, Perkins with eight, Westbrook with six, Lewis with five and Ian Garner with four.

On Wednesday, the boys lost a heartbreaker to Skyline, 52-51. Scott had 14 points and Compton had 11.

The Lady Lions played Columbia on Tuesday (Dec. 28) and lost, 62-44. Kirkland scored 14 points, and Kailynn Childress and Alli Persle had six points each.

On Wednesday, the Lady Lions defeated Danville 44-38. Chantzley Kirkland scored 14 points, Childress had nine, Autumn Abernathy had six and Kyleigh Wilks five.

Persle and Abby Mooneyham had three each.

On Thursday against John Paul II Catholic, the Lady Lions fell 39-33.

Kirkland had nine points and Childress scored eight. Abernathy and Karli Westbrook – scored four points each and Adri Knepper had three.
