A pin in the last match of the night lifted the Arab varsity wrestling team to a dramatic 36-34 win over Jasper in the Class 1A-5A State Duals Tournament quarterfinals at Jasper on Thursday night.
After defeating Corner 53-21 in the preliminary round, Arab trailed the host team 34-30 going into the final match (160 pound class). Knowing Arab needed a pin or tech fall, the Knights’ Caleb Roe got the pin for the team win.
Arab, winners of the first two State Dual Tournaments, is seeking to reclaim the title after falling short last season. The Knights also finished runner-up in the traditional tournament after winning six straight state titles.
The Knights, winners of the Region 8 championship, took a huge step toward winning the duals event again by beating Region 7 winner Jasper. The Knights now will host the championship semifinal round Tuesday night beginning at 6.
Jasper had advanced by beating Region 7 runner-up Madison County.
Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, Arab went 2-0 in duals at Hartselle, defeating Muscle Shoals 76-6 and then the host team 45-31.
This week’s action puts Arab’s duals record for the season at 34-2.
The 1A-5A State Duals finals are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 24) at the Birmingham Crossplex.
