The reward for the Arab varsity volleyball team for winning the Marshall County Tournament and the 6A, Area 15 regular season championship was a tune-up road trip to the coast for the long Columbus Day weekend.

Coach Amy Hudson was pleased with the extra preparation for the postseason, which for Arab begins Saturday when it hosts the Area 15 Tournament, assured already of making the field for next week’s North Super Regional at Huntsville.

Arab at 11 a.m. hosts the winner between Scottsboro and Fort Payne, who play at 10 a.m. Both the winner and runner-up advance to the next round.

Arab won five of eight matches on its coastal trip.

“We pretty much accomplished what we wanted to,” Hudson said on the drive home Tuesday. “We mostly played good. I was pretty happy with the trip overall.”

More than wins and losses, Hudson was looking for improvement in certain areas. She saw some.

“We won some matches against the some strong teams, and we played some three-set and five-set matches, which is what we needed to work on,” she said.

Playing in the Shrimp Festival Invitational at Foley on Friday, Arab defeated Buckhorn 2-1 before losing to St. Paul’s 0-2.

On Saturday, the Lady Knights blanked T.R. Miller 2-0, lost to James Clemens 1-2, beat Providence Christian 2-0, beat Northridge 2-1 and lost to Lawrence County 0-2 to end tournament play.

On Monday, Arab defeat Daphne in a marathon match, 25-21, 25-14, 17-25, 17-25, 15-10.

Arab, while already in the Super Regional, wants badly to win Saturday’s area final. If it does, it’ll play the runner-up of Area 12, which plays its tournament today at Clay-Chalkville, the No. 1 seed that hosts Pinson Valley. No. 2 Mortimer Jordan plays No. 3 Gardendale for the other berth in the area final.

If Arab loses on Saturday, it will play the Area 12 champion.

Arab will play its first game in the Super Regional (time and opponent not yet known) on Wednesday in the South Hall of the Von Braun Center.

Arab students will be able to attend the Super Regional on Wednesday and possibly Thursday, but a parent note will be required for the absence to be excused.
