After an undefeated start to the season, the Arab varsity volleyball team went 5-3 last week then split a pair of matches Tuesday to move to 14-4 on the season. Yet, the Lady Knights remained at No. 7 in the Class 5A poll released Thursday.
That had a lot to do with the quality of teams Arab has competed against in recent days.
On Saturday, Arab fell to Buckhorn 15-25, 21-25 in the semifinals of the Albertville Tournament to finish the day 2-2 to tie for fourth. Arab also fell to Buckhorn in pool play, 15-24, 19-25.
Buckhorn is ranked No. 8 in Class 6A. The Lady Knights’ wins at Albertville were against Ider (25-17, 25-9) and DAR (25-11, 25-17).
On Tuesday, Arab played its first 5A, Area 15 opponent of the season at Brewer, losing to the Patriots in a highly competitive match, 18-25, 25-23, 21-25.
Brewer is ranked No. 2 in 5A. In its other match on Tuesday, Arab defeated Priceville 25-16, 23-25, 16-14.
Arab’s only other loss was to undefeated Albertville, now ranked No. 3 in Class 6A. See the complete rankings on page 6 of Saturday's Arab Tribune.
Arab’s top player for last week was freshman middle hitter Karli Walker. She had nine aces, 54 kills and 19 solo blocks.
Overall stats for Walker during the Albertville Invitational were four aces, 13 solo blocks, two block assists and 28 kills.
