The Arab Junior Knights basketball teams had a few ups and downs in the last couple of games, with the seventh grade boys suffering their first loss of the season.

Sometimes you just can’t get things going and such was the case for the Knights last Thursday. Arab didn’t score a single point in the first quarter and found themselves down 17-0.

“They couldn’t miss and both our teams were a little leg weary from the schedule we’ve had and it showed,” said coach Jason Guger. Carson Jennings and Drew Puccio had seven points each.

The Knights rebounded Monday night with some somewhat unexpected help.

“Carson Jennings had scored 15 points total until tonight but he got hot and the kids kept feeding him the ball,” said Guger.

Jennings connected on four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points. Logan Alldredge had seven points and Puccio five. Evan Brazelton and Landon Strickland had four points each.

“We played a lot better defensively tonight, too,” Guger said.

The Knights pushed their record to 4-0 last Thursday, but it wasn’t easy. Dylan Hornsby made his only bucket of the night by nailing a 3-pointer with 10 seconds to go to give Arab the win.

Zac Hallman led the Knights with 14 points and Dylan Kirkland had seven. Hornsby and Brandon Morris had three points each.

It was a down-to-the-wire heartbreaker for the previously unbeaten Knights, but the writing on the wall came at the free throw line.

“We missed lots of free throws,” Guger said.

In fact, Arab hit only 9 of 26 from the stripe. Hallman had another impressive night with 18 points, Morris had nine and Martin five. Carter Kelley had three and Kirkland added two.

Ella Bradshaw had five points and M.G. Thomas and Ava Wooten had four each in a relatively easy win last Thursday.

The Lady Knights cruised to another easy win Monday, but coach Terance Maze is still looking for better play in some areas.

“We played well the whole game but we’re still not always finishing the way we need to,” he said. “We missed a lot of easy layups early but did a better job with that as the game went on.

“We’re playing good defensively and we took better care of the ball tonight, too.”

Arab put together a solid 10-point third quarter. Ava Wooten had 10 points for Arab, Ava Kinney had nine and Maleah Wooten had three.

The Lady Knights struggled to get within striking distance of the Aggies in this one last Thursday. McKenna Tidmore had five points while Madeline King and Madeline Ashburn had four each.

Things turned around for the girls in the Lake City on Monday.

“We started well and we finished well,” Maze said. “We played good defense tonight but the big difference was we made  shots.”

Molly Buck connected on three 3’s.

“Molly had a good night. Two of those 3’s were in the first half and she hit a dagger in the fourth quarter that was big for us,” said Maze.

Buck had 11 points and Tidmore had five. Brooklyn Jennings and King had four each.

• The Junior Knights are at Priceville Friday night with the exception of the seventh grade girls, who will have the night off.
