New Arab girls coach Brad Kitchens also welcomed half of his varsity players to their first practice on Monday, but he was just happy to be there.
“Who can believe a little over a month ago I was over in Huntsville lying flat of my back from quadruple bypass surgery and a heart valve replacement,” Kitchens said. “I’m very thankful to have the help that I have.”
Kitchens is having to lean on varsity assistant Terance Maze quite a bit in the early going, as well as JV coach Carleigh Henderson.
“As you can imagine, I’m limited on what I can do physically so Terrance and I sit down and talk out the practice schedule,” Kitchens said. “Then he does most of the physical teaching and I oversee.
“Right now, we’re limited on what we can do. I only have four varsity players available as five are still in volleyball and Bryleigh Bodine is recovering from knee surgery.
“That being said, we’ve got a good JV bunch and we’re getting after each other pretty hard.”
When the team is together, there will be 10 varsity players: Bodine, Kate Collins, Mary Kate Hallman, Tatum Monroe, Bennett Elrod, Aspen Miller, Laney Kelley, Sydney Ferguson, Bennett Elrod, Lilly Livingston and Lexi Mann.
On JV will be Emma Babb, Ella Bradshaw, Maggie Chastain, Shea Kelley, Ava Kinney, Hannah Poston, Makenzie Stanfield, Julie Stapler, Mallory Grace Thomas, Ava Wooten and Maleah Wooten.
