Mr. Conrad was born Dec. 30, 1944, in Canton, Miss., to Arlene Claburn and James F. Conrad. He was married to the former Sheila Stiles for 51 years.
Spending most of his youth in Arab surrounded by extended family, he had many fond memories of his upbringing in the rural south. Many of his writings and memoirs later in life were based in the heart of his childhood community. He attended Grassy Elementary and Grassy Junior High and later graduated from S.R. Butler High School in Huntsville.
He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and was assigned to a Special Military Unit the VO-67, stationed in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand. Despite the trials of war and losing many friends along the way, he had a great love for this country and reverence for his time overseas. For his service, he received several honors, including the Air Medal and will be recognized on the Enlisted Combat Aircrew Roll of Honor in early 2022.
After graduating from Athens State College, he and his family relocated to Marysville, Wash., in 1976 as he began a 36-year career with Boeing. He retired in 2012.
He and his family enjoyed cross-country road trips, camping, day adventures, and supporting one another at special events. His love of family was a theme throughout his life. He also enjoyed taking long drives and listening to good music, reading great literary works, writing short stories, sitting on his deck in the backyard of their Marysville home, and tinkering in his garden.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a fervent testimony of God’s love and His teachings.
