Susan Beck

Susan Miller Burford Beck, 74, of Union Grove died Tuesday, July 27, 2021.

Mrs. Beck was born Oct. 31, 1946, in Haleyville to Howard Frances Burford and Beatrice Irene Miller Burford. She was married to James Alton Beck.

She lived a life of dedication to family and service to others. She was always involved with community activities and volunteered to be room mother, substitute teacher, PTA president in Anniston and PTO president in the Union Grove school. She volunteered her time and resources to many other community activities i.e. Red Cross volunteer, community action assistance program, Cub Scout den mother, band booster volunteer, CASA program to transport elderly people to doctors’ appointments, shopping, and other personal errands and to many other charitable programs. 

She put her heart and soul into the Court Appointed Juvenile Advocacy (CAJA) program for Marshall County. Susan worked more than 150 cases over a 21-year timeframe. She was nominated for the Alabama CAJA volunteer of the year in 2019 and was selected by the board. 

She was struck with stage four metastatic breast cancer in 2015 and continued to give her time, resources and heart to other people until she could not physically continue. She was treated at the UAB in Birmingham for 4.5 years through a clinical trial, but the cancer eventually won out.

She is survived by her husband: James Beck; sons and daughter-n-law: James Beck Jr., and Daniel and Jennifer Beck; sister: Nancy Mize; brother and sister-in-law: Howard and Mari Burford Jr.; grandchildren: James Beck III, Blake Perritt, Gracie Beck, Kaleigh Beck, and Lexi Beck; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was prededed in death by brothers-in-law: Billy Beck and Donald Carden.
