Irene Monroe

Irene Mamie Monroe, 93, of Blountsville died Friday, Aug. 5, 2022, at Marshall Manor Nursing Home.

Mrs. Monroe was born Sept. 22, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to William Stephen Massie and Mamie Krapp Massie. She was married to Thomas Andrew Monroe, who preceded her in death.

She moved to Arab, Alabama, in 1965 and was a retired teacher from Arab Junior High School and Arab High School, and was passionate about the education of her students and her family. She enjoyed spending time nurturing the flowers and mowing the grass outside her home, and loved spending time with her family as “Grandma”.

She leaves behind a family forged in love and laughter, and will be celebrated by those touched by her ever-growing legacy.

She is survived by her children: Marian Brazzell (Sherrell) of Birmingham, Raymond (Renee) of Crystal Lake, Ill., Carl (Ellen) of Roland, Ark., Larry (Cindy) of Braselton, Ga., Alec (Sonia) of Woodstock, and Ted (Tina) of Arab; grandchildren: Jay (Shauna), Charlie (Sarah), Meredith, Andrew (Taylor), Barbara (Jeremy), Alex (Esther), Alan, Kaitlin, William (Alicia), John (fiancée Tara), Robert (Rachel), Thomas (Melissa), Sammie Jo (James), Tanner, Tatum, and Tessa; and 26 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brothers: William Stephen Massie Jr., George Melvin Massie, James Howard Massie; and sister: Vera Marion Massie.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, Aug. 11, 2022, at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at Brookwood Cemetery with Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel directing.
