Helen Barnes McWhorter, 87, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2021.
Mrs. McWhorter was born Aug. 5, 1934, to James Allen and Margaret Katherine Spurgeon Barnes. She was married to Kenneth McWhorter.
She grew up in North Alabama, graduated from Arab High School then moved to Birmingham, where she graduated from Massey Business College.
She was a long-time employee of Alabama Power Company, taking time off to be at home with her young daughters.
She held a deep faith and was a member of the Baptist church. She taught Sunday school for young children and then the senior ladies of her church, First Baptist of Center Point, for many years. She loved these ladies, and they, her.
She had many life-long friends, some with whom she enjoyed traveling in their seniors travel group, visiting Europe and sites across the United States.
She was an avid gardener and enjoyed her azaleas, roses, angel trumpets, day lilies, and more.
She adored her family, and enjoyed spending time with them. Her Sunday family dinners remain legendary.
She is survived by her husband: Kenneth McWhorter; daughter and son-in-law: Mitzi and Randy Mize; daughter and son-in-law: Susan and Jeff Jessen; and grandchildren: Harrison Bakane ,Grayson Bakane and Isabella Jessen.
Services were Monday, Aug. 16, 2021, in Birmingham, followed by internment at Brookwood Cemetery in Arab.
