Ernest “Gene” Eugene Buchanan, 91, died Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at Shepherd’s Cove Hospice in Albertville.
Mr. Buchanan was born Dec. 4, 1931, to Oliver Burton Buchanan and Annie Lou Delia Harrell Buchanan. He was married to Fay Smith Buchanan, who passed away in July of 2019.
He retired from civil service where he was a water treatment plant superintendent.
He was of the Baptist faith and a faithful member of New Friendship Baptist Church, where he served for many years as a deacon. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and camping.
He is survived by his sons: Joe Buchanan (Jenny), James Buchanan (Linda) and Daryl Buchanan (Alison); daughter: Sandra Dotson; brother: Roy Buchanan (Pat); sister: Virginia Medlock (Jonathan); 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son: Harold Buchanan; brothers: Bobby Buchanan and J.C. Buchanan; and sisters: Mary Roe, Nell Bright and Doris Chapman.
The funeral was at 3 p.m. Friday, May 5, 2023, at New Friendship Baptist Church with Daniel Boutwell officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery with Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel directing.
Pallbearers were Corey Buchanan, Daniel Buchanan, Branden Blamer, Vann Dotson, Russell Dotson and Zac Buchanan.
