U.S. 231 from Morgan City to Lacey’s Spring – north and southbound – won’t reopen anytime soon.
What started out as a crack in the southbound lanes of U.S. 231 got significantly worse Wednesday night into Thursday morning prompting officials to shut down all four lanes of the highway up and down the mountain in Morgan County.
Alabama Department of Transportation officials said the condition of the highway deteriorated because of all the rain the area has gotten in recent weeks.
At press time Friday, ALDOT spokesman Seth Burkett said the highway will be shut down indefinitely. ALDOT is bringing in geologists and other experts to study the problem before it is repaired.
