The Arab Board of Education approved a contract “amendment” with Dr. Johnny Berry that essentially gives him an 18-month extension as Superintendent, with the amended contract term ending June 30, 2025.

The original contract would have expired Dec. 30, 2023.

“I appreciate your confidence in me,” said Dr. Berry. “We’re in a trying time but we’re going to keep working.”

Berry will receive a 2-percent raise as approved for all employees by the state legislature and also a state approved matrix raise for employees with 10 years or more of service.

“The matrix raise is adjusted based on the number of years you’ve been employed,” said school board attorney Clint Maze. “In Dr. Berry’s case, that calculates to a 7.94-percent total increase in his salary, which is the same increase that all other employees received with the same number of years service.”

The board approved the amendment following a presentation by Dr. Jennifer Gray, a consultant for the Alabama Association of School Boards, which conducted Berry’s evaluation.
