The sales tax holiday on back-to-school items kicks off at 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 19, and runs through midnight, Sunday, July 21.

During the sales tax holiday, certain school supply items will be exempt from the city sales tax, as well as state tax.

In Arab, shoppers normally pay 9 cents on the dollar, with 4 cents going to the state and 5 to the city. Shoppers will save that 9 cents this weekend on back-to-school items.

Most retail stores in town reported sales increases of as much as 25 percent during the sales tax holiday last year.
