In November 2001 Perry Patrick Ramsey broke into the Scant City residence of his friend, Tracy Bagwell. Ramsey drove his car to Scant City, parked it behind a service station, then walked to Bagwell’s residence.

He has never said why, but Ramsey, then 27, walked into Bagwell’s residence and shot him at least five times with a high-powered, .223 deer rifle. Bagwell’s young children witnessed the shooting and called for help.

Ramsey pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease, but he was found guilty.

Today he is 47 years old and is in Bullock Correctional Facility serving a life sentence, though in Alabama a life sentence doesn’t mean life. He was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole.

Ramsey will have his second parole hearing May 2 at the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles in Montgomery. The board denied his first early release request five years ago.

Bagwell’s family members plan to be there to protest the possible parole.
