The Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles on Thursday denied early release from prison for an Arab man convicted of trying to kill an Arab police officer in 2003.

John Spencer Young is serving a life sentence for the 2004 conviction of attempted murder in Marshall County.

Young, now 41, shot four times at former Arab police officer Brian Matthews’ head while struggling with the officer.

His next chance at parole will be in February 2025.

Young has served 15 years and 11 months of the life sentence. He also was convicted in 2003 of criminal mischief in Madison County and has four convictions in Morgan County, all in 1999, for theft, two counts of burglary and unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle, for which he was sentenced to five years.

He had served only one and a half years of his five-year sentence when he was paroled in 2000.
