The Marshall County Commission approved two exemptions for the proposed car tag fee that would pay for school resource officers in Marshall County Schools.

The commission did not approve a fee – just the exemptions.

The actual fee is scheduled to be discussed at the commission’s next meeting, next Wednesday.

The two exemptions are:

• Residents 65 and older;

• Residents who are 100-percent disabled.

There was also some discussion on limiting the fee to two tags per household, but there was no agreement on the definition of a household.

“If your grown daughter and her husband live with you, that’s really two families in one household,” District 1 Commissioner Ronny Shumate told the Tribune.

“If we limit the fee to two, it probably should be two per address,” he said.

Shumate said if the fee is to be assessed, he’s for $20 per tag.
