Former Marshall County District 1 Commissioner Charlie McClendon, 81, died last Thursday following a long illness.

McClendon was the last Democrat elected to the seat. He served from 2002-2006.

As a commissioner, he helped prevent Atlanta and other large areas from diverting water from the Tennessee River, surprised the local hospital board with an animal control and mosquito rule and took on utilities that cut up county roads.
