A body found in the water at the Guntersville Dam Monday was that of a Chattanooga man.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office said the man’s body was swept down river from Chattanooga to Guntersville because of the Tennessee River being swollen from recent heavy rains.

“On Jan. 29, witnesses saw George E. Koontz jump from the Walnut Street Bridge in downtown Chattanooga,” said Marshall County Sheriff’s Assistant Chief Deputy Steve Guthrie. “The family of Mr. Koontz had reported him missing that same day.”

Guthrie said that due to heavy rains the past few weeks and the fact flood gates have remained open along the Tennessee River, this enabled the body to travel from Chattanooga to Guntersville, a total of 19 days and 122 miles by way of the river.
