Arab had what is believed to be its best month ever in sales tax collections in January.

According to City Clerk Tony Willis, the city’s gross receipts totaled $1,016,213 for the month, that reflect sales in December.

The amount is $278,148 more than the same time last year. Gross receipts are currently $605,604 above budget for the year.

There was $2,002,116 in the general fund at the end of January, $1,223,886 in savings and $14,693 in the tobacco account.

Willis said that even after recent purchases for an asphalt trailer, a bucket truck and a pickup, there was about $3 million in the capital outlay account.

“Even after the expenses that were approved tonight, we should still have in the neighborhood of $2.6 million in that account,” said Willis.

The city transferred $199,701 to the capital account in January and $260,871 was transferred to Arab City Schools.

For the fiscal year thus far, the city has transferred $1,097,057 to the local school system.
