During WWII, many families in Arab reluctantly – but proudly – sent family members off to war. Women cried as husbands, brothers and sons waved farewell.

There were even some mothers and daughters who heeded the call to join and did so even though draft laws did not mandate their involvement. All those left at home hoped that Uncle Sam would take care of their kin.

Dr. William Trice Hinds and Maggie Suwannee Cochran Hinds of Arab were parents to nine children. One of the nine was Leon Henry Hinds. Leon was born on Jan. 27, 1907, in Arab and was child number six born to William and Maggie.
