I keep reading how the Marshall County Commission chairman wants to borrow money to build a new jail, which will be in the multi-million dollars.

Before we go off getting in debt for a new jail, why don’t we talk about something that will help all the taxpayers of Marshall County, especially the elderly and those with mobility issues?

As an older citizen – and taxpayer – of Marshall County, I do not expect to be in a courtroom.

But I do have to go to the courthouse to pay property taxes. I do have to buy car tags and I do have to renew my driver’s license, like most everyone else.

Many of us older citizens have great difficulty managing the steps and inclines at the Guntersville courthouse.

I do not know anyone who does not have difficulty parking at the Courthouse, especially on court days. I’m afraid someone is going to get hurt with the parking situation being what it is.

Before we go into debt over a new jail, and after spending millions of dollars on the one we already have, how about a conversation about finding a location for tags, property taxes and other services used by all Marshall County taxpayers and drivers that would be more accessible?
