“Come on over and sit for a moment, John.”

I wasn’t really planning on doing so when I drove up. I saw that my neighbor, Tommy and his wife, Alma, had company, and I didn’t want to intrude. But he added, “I want you to meet a friend of mine.”

So, I moseyed on up to the porch and took the offered hand of Scott “Dan” Daniel before sitting down.

Dan explained that he and his daughter, Melissa, were visiting from Wisconsin, staying with his brother in Birmingham as they attended a memorial. They had driven to Arab since he, Tommy and Alma had known each other since childhood, and they wanted to visit.

The talk centered upon the Green Bay Packers and “Cheese Heads,” the old Milwaukee Braves, past family histories, motorcycles and life-and-death transitions.
